Great model.
Hi - I discovered this beautiful series of threads only a few days ago and really enjoyed browsing through them.. before I was on this site merely to get information for buying my gear - what a shame... thanks to all for sharing!
This one was taken recently in the dunes at the belgium coast with a Linhof Technika V and a 210mm lens / shot at f5.6 / time is forgotten... Polaroid 55.

Joseph,
Nicely done. Love the searsucker jacket. Would love to know camera/lens/developer data if you are willing to share. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks Grant, and also ajsikel-
Good pictures all round, it's a good month-
This was taken in a large bright room with a roof light-
the board at the back shows the reflection of it,
and also helped to shade some of the light from behind Jon.
Some light was borrowed from a window behind him, and to his left,
another window in front of him, and to his right, was shaded.
I used my (white) dark cloth to reflect back, and brighten the eyes-
Film was Fomapan 200 in HC110, first time using it-
I used the Massive Dev Chart recommendation of 11.5 mins Dil. H-
Developed in a slosher, intermittent agitation.
Lens was a Nikkor M 300mm, at ƒ/11, 1/10 second.
some compensation for bellows...
Rising front was the only movement I purposely used...
Camera was the Arca Irish 8x10 which I posted here a couple of months ago-
Jon was very pleased with his Digital Ixus, and thought I was quite mad, but he humoured me-
He's an old school and college friend, and he was back for a reunion-
he wore that jacket that night, and I asked him to wear it again for the picture-
I kinda like the way all the in focus stripes came out so vertical...
I still haven't printed it yet, look forward to it.
We had a conversation about attitude, and about the fact that I wouldn't be making many exposures,
and about the magic of big cameras, and that all he had to do was stand there-
and project. Very important that, and I reckon he got it-
As a contact, it'll be fine, but looking deep into the scan, depth of field is only about 40mm-
I was lucky to get the eyes in that zone...
I made two pictures, both slightly different, this was by far the more successful one-
Thanks again-
joseph

It's a self-portrait by Maurice Quentin de La Tour (1704 – 1788). He was a French Rococo portraitist who worked primarily with pastels. He was competing with other pastellistes like Liotard. I wanted to make a point about attitude in portraits - shoulders, arms and shorter lenses.

Here goes again. (the reproductions below were surely done in LF, so it's legit to post them). Walk through a portrait gallery and admit what a bore most of the pictures are.
The few pictures that do come across have 'attitude'. The bee in my bonnet is about how to capture attitude from shoulders, elbows and to a lesser extent, the hands - and a little bit of acting.
So why does the head-shot below come acress? That's the second bee in my bonnet; the viewer has to feel close to the sitter. Facial perspective is one of the first thing you learn as an infant. That's your father looking down at you in your cot. The painter is using a short lens.
Boring portraits bore because the sitter is remote. So get attitude and perspective. Elbows and short lenses are great for that.
Paul Kierstead

Well, I'm glad its not just me then. There has been a push on here for a National Portrait Gallery, and I've visited the portrait section in the National Gallery quite a few times. Quite frankly, it is the most boring part of the gallery by a fair measure. IMO, most of the classic portrait paintings are the equivalent of seniors photos in the modern age; pays the bills, but not much fun to look at for anyone who doesn't know the subject.

This was a first (test) picture with a new to me Zeiss Softar filter. And the subject closest at hand was my daughter (almost 4 now). But that would be unlike her if she did not make a face into the camera... :) I have yet to fully learn how to use it well, especially in regards to out of focus areas (which are not apparent in this shot, but are in others I made).

Jiri,, wonderful shot,, she reminds me of my baby so many years ago
Vlad Soare
19-May-2009, 04:15
Jiří, how do you make a four year old kid hold perfectly still until you're done fiddling with the camera? At 300mm on 5x8" I imagine that the tiniest move forwards or backwards would have thrown her face out of focus.
What's your secret?
Jiri, what a fabulous shot! So soft, and so harmonious!
Jiri Vasina
19-May-2009, 04:56
:D
Thanks Steve and Vlad. There's no secret there - if you would have seen the larger version of the negative, you'd see that the focus is not perfect, only nearly so: the best focus is at her ears, some 1-2cm behind her eyes. But it's enough to make do.
Now, the composition and preparation. In this shot I prepared the chair in advance, roughly composed, guessed where the head would be, focused on the rear of chair and then a bit in front of it. Then I asked her to sit on the chair while I held the chair so as it did not move. Then I went to the camera and did the fine touches in composition and focus, all the time talking to her about something or other. I even managed to measure the exposition off her :) and take 2 expositions on 13x18cm.
From the amount of photos I already took of her (and from seeing me how long it takes me until I take a photo), she already knows she has to be a bit patient. But her restlessness comes across anyway - on her face. The amount of faces she makes is impossible to count, it's easiest and best to just wait for the least bad of them...
One think that helps is my use of Fuji instant film. Focusing and composing with the 4x5" MPP is not fast either, but every time I take a single photo, I'll call her, let her wait the 90 or so seconds and then show her the photo right away. And I show her what a nice photo that would have been if she did not move, or did not make the face... I have also given her my Minolta A200 on occasions and let her use it to take a photo. She likes it very much. (I know she should have a film camera, preferably LF, but those are the first steps :D ).
Now she is so well inoculated, that she sometimes (especially when she's playing with my 6months son) she calls to me or the mother "come here and photograph us, this is worth taking photo of..."
Jiri
P.S.: here is the second exposure I shot. I like the first one more, though

Jiri - so do you actually go there and take shots of them playing? :)

It seems it's much easier to shoot little children close than from a distance.

I have shot some child portraits with 127mm lens at really close distances. Here's a link to one that has the elbow thing and some posing:........
Very nice! :)

Do animals count?
Very much so - especially as their portraits illustrate "...how to capture attitude from shoulders, elbows and to a lesser extent, the hands"
Or should I say... paws ? ;)

My Apo-Ronar 480mm is without shutter, so I had to choose such a combination of film/shutter/aperture to allow for lens-cap-shutter instead - f/22 and 2sec. And my wife managed to hold perfectly still... It is my first portrait with this lens, but have to do more as I like it very much...

Jiri its very nice and you have a very pretty woman!
Is it the single coated APO Ronar so then I should als test mine, but I'm lucky mine is in a shutter, but only single coated. But with only 4 lenses it should not be a problem.
Cheers Armin

Mark ... I laughed out loud when I read your response because I was thinking the same exact thing.
This is one of the nice effects of a soft focus that you just can't get any other way.
Very nice photo ... nice lighting angle and love the disappearing lane behind the subjects. That is a classic from another era!

I'm a throwback on many levels.
I was on my way home and passed by the FFA fair this morning, and negotiated a moment of this busy youngster's time. Just got this lens from Mr. Galli and was looking to try out some daylight exposures. The use of the cow's head as a reflector I thought was particularly opportunistic.
Glad to hear someone likes it.

Anachronisms have their place, thank God! :)
well if you'd just got that lens from Mr. Galli,
then there were multiple anachronisms involved-
I like it too-

Some new wet plate collodion work from yesterday. All are 8x10 on aluminum shot with a Derogy portrait petzval. My daughter and a few of her college friends. A bunch of great kids who were amazed with the process and even more so the results. Good times...

Thanks for the comments and for not being curmudgeonly! This was one of my best days behind a camera, ever. Working with these great kids and watching them express themselves with just a little guidance from me was a blast. We made about 15 plates in about 4 hours.

Kerik,
they are all beautiful. I especially like the fact that these represent that time in their life in which a certain frivolity is so clearly innocent. These capture that perfectly.
Molly is my favorite as well but those are small margins we are dealing with.
I on the other hand like yours better than Weston's but then I don't believe things can't be interpreted anew and better in some cases just because it was done by someone else, i.e. famous. If that were the case Ansel wouldn't have been allowed into Yosimite after Watkins.

I didn't even know or remember that Weston did a gas mask girl. It's been a looonng time since I looked at his work.
Wait, are you saying I'm not famous??? DAMMMIT! :)

Yeah, Weston did several shots of Charis nude, wearing just the gas mask. Not his greatest work, IMHO.
