hey all,

i have been trying to get my local photo club to have a monthly assignment that is "something dead".....so far no luck. i think it is a great topic.

feel free to interpret this in any way you like. i have several ideas.

here is my 1st take.

4x5 pinhole image (i have the same shot in color from my RB67 but it is not appropriate here....) 75mm "focal length" f216. National monument.

i titled it "dead horse gulch"

Here are some dried flowers (thus good 'n' dead) on the door to the mausoleum where Leland, Jane and Leland Stanford Junior (after whom the University where I work is named) are interred. Directly and indirectly fits your "Something Dead" theme.

i setup a shot to expose a sheet of kodak 320TXP. i wanted to test what the right timing is for 1:25 rodinal souping. ended up doing rodinal 1:25 for 16 minutes, frequent agitation.

this shot turned out better than i imagined.

I suspect that some images (http://www.afterimagegallery.com/featureadams.htm) do well at big sizes, because even when enlarged, there are still small forms of visual interest.

I tried the above photo at 12x15, and while the details hold, it looks better if you stand back a bit - perhaps because the basic forms are rather large.

This is my first attempt at LF still life. It's a skull that one of our surveyors found in the field. I put it on a dark cloth with a softbox on each side. There's a little back tilt to keep the teeth and face in focus but soften the inside of the sockets. It's a learning experience for me.

Boar Skull..... I hunted this critter, ate the meat, had the head made into a mount, and the skull was bleached..... Taken with 5" modified petzval on 4x5 cropped square as fall off was way too much. Print was made onto FOMA paper, lightly bleached back, lightly sepia toned, and finished in selenium.

I almost stepped on this guy -- I was getting a touch of snow blindness, as I left my sunglasses in the car. We were just going to check this area out and ended up photographing for several hours. I had to wear my darkcloth over my head a peak out of a small opening to reduce the glare of the sun off the snow.

Going on a beach explore on Gabriola Island I came upon the carcass of a sea lion. It was pretty rank... I left it to the eagles and seagulls.
Six months later went back to the same spot. The birds and the crabs had done their job. The remaining bones had been sheparded by the tide into this neat pile.

There is a story to accompany this one. I found this negative in the vault of an abandoned research hospital in an undisclosed location (government land way out at the end of some poorly maintained roadways full of potholes and littered with branches and rocks). The drawer was labelled "CLOSED FILES" and the folder the negative was affixed to bore a label which read "RESEARCH SUBJECT 14B191". On reading the files in the folder I learned that this was an animal that had escaped from the facility and was tracked with dogs for weeks until its remains were found. Much of the document was blanked out, including all of the research notes, so I do not know what kind of work was being done with this particular animal, nor what sort of animal it was. What little readable text remained was just an account of the successful recovery of the remains and subsequent closing of the file.

What condition was the negative in when you found it? I've been looking at that, and it seems pieced together. The image title suggests that, too.

From the condition of the animal's bones, I doubt that they found the animal that escaped. Those bones have been out there for a while, and they probably came across them and decided to call the search off, and just BS their boss. "I'm tired. Wanna head back?" "Yeah, I'll just make a couple of bad photos of this, and we'll call it good." "OK."

In a gallery show a few years back, I had this printed 40x50" (surface mounted on Masonite). At first glance you're really not sure what you're looking at. People would come up , start discussing the image.. most liked it. There's a tremendous amount of detail and texture in the image.. and people would get close (nose to print). Usually, at this point, I'd tell them what it was... I often thought it would make a great installation of a video of everyone's reaction... their first reaction was to jump back.. way back.. followed by a change in facial expressions from admiration to horror (never disgust.. they still always like the image.. just didn't want to get close to it any more :)

It is the county morgue. I shot the space early in the morning, before they bring the bodies out. After I got the empty shot, I hung around for the posted shot with one visible body. They typically bring out 6-7 for a morning's session, almost all gun and knife victims. I was working for the design architect when I took the photos, and I did the field work on the project. I saw a lot of bodies! Funny how you get used to it.

IMHO this is excellent. Might be the Weston-like lighting and simplicity of composition that I'm a sucker for but I like the juxtaposition of the nearly celebratory brilliance of tone with its hooked/helpless deadness.

Yes, bother it, lack of rear shift. The camera got off-square chasing the shadow on the right.

So it's only half a cheat.

Is this film amazing, or did you manipulate those photos? They look almost like paintings to me, especially the grapes. They could have been taken right out of a Caravaggio still life.

Actually, I'm not sure if you should ask, for this was in fact, something dead. I called the Portland police about it when I got home, and after giving the dispatcher the location and a detailed description, she told me that they'd send someone out to take a look. She then offered that they would contact me in the off-chance that it turned out to be "something." I haven't heard back.

This seems as good a place to put this as any. This is my third attempt at large format photography. I first attempted to get into it a several years ago with the purchase of a Sinar F1 and a Caltar lens, either 150mm or 135mm, I can't quite remember. I took it out once and got a few pictures, but the subject matter was incredibly uninspiring, and I simply didn't have the necessary patience to get an image I was happy with. I tried again about two years ago, borrowing a Crown Graphic from a co-worker. I thought the more limited movements and easier portability might inspire me to get something out of it. I learned a very valuable lesson about loading film in the holders in the proper direction that weekend (notches right!), and figured maybe it was an omen that LF really wasn't for me. However, after trolling the forums here and poking around online, the bug bit me again. I knew if I could just take a deep breath and slow down a bit, I would be able to make some pictures I was happy with. I slowly acquired all the gear, having sold off all my previous gear about a year ago, and finally got a chance to get out with it last weekend. I took four pictures, but really just two, as I took an extra exposure of each with slightly different settings. Two were black and white and two were color, which I'm still waiting to get back, since no one in Seattle develops color 4x5 film. I'm really happy with how this came out, and next weekend I plan on printing it. The sky seems a little splotchy, which I can't decide if it's uneven development or simply what the sky looked like. Otherwise, I think it looks pretty good, and I'd like to thank the folks on this forum for motivating me to give it one more chance. I hope there are many more to come.

maclaine, I really like this image. Not that it matters but did you find the scene this way or did you put the bones on the wire? There does seem to be some unevenness in the development.

Thanks, Rick. This is exactly how this scene looked when I stumbled on it. I was driving down a little county road, and it dead ended. As I was spinning my car around, I noticed this pair of ribs. I honestly can't imagine what the purpose of hanging them there would be, or where the rest of the animal was, but it sure made for a great photographic opportunity!

The animal died on this lonely patch of coastal heath near Noosa and the corruption of its flesh long past has become part of the earth. The rush of nutrients has brought forth mushrooms to celebrate their own feast; death, dissolution, renewal.....so it goes.

Almost forgotten about this. File from a little 5X7 Palladium contact but it makes a spectacular 20X14. Game cock farmer trapped and killed owls and hung them up as warnings to OTHER owls, if you can believe that. Was quite an unusual thing to bump into.

And I see why! Very engaging. It challenges what we've been told since childhood that dead things are gross and ugly. That's beautiful to me!

Found him on the floor, perfecly mummified. He now lives on top of the aquarium, silently reminding the others not to jump.

I had a pet toad when I was a kid that met a similar fate. He got out and eluded two cats and a dog just to find his way fatefully into our unfinished family room that was being sheetrocked and sanded at the time. Little guy never had a chance in that gypsum wasteland.

I used to collect dead tube TV from Chicago alleys, 1985, they were everywhere

Then setup a mirror and video cam

and drop or throw big rocks from behind

I wanted to capture a rock coming out of TV

Some of those old tubes were very thick and strong

I doubt I can find my VHS tape


the odd part was they gently donated dead TV to alley, not dumpster

I had a 1951 wood cabinet TV I fixed with a working color TV, most never noticed it was color...
