How exactly does one compare a non-printed scan and a scanned print of two disparate subjects, and from two different places, times, and photographers???

Besides which, optical printing of positive film is basically in the grave.

(Both images are very nice. Thomas, the red hues in your image are particularly nice - though I think that's due to the subject and time of day, not printing. Perhaps more people would look at your image if you actually hotlinked it rather than presenting a link to your website, using the [img] tags?)

Thomas,

That's a nice darkroom print in #496, I know how tough it is to get a good darkroom print. You've got beautiful colors in the print, what film stock did you use? I should get up there this year, we've got more rain than usual in California. So I am sure it will be spectacular at Horsetail Falls this year.

But the drum scanner is dead also. I mean that while I have never been in the market for one, every one I see advertised for sale is used and requires an ancient piece of computer hardware to run it - they don't work on modern platforms. But who need them anyway? Apple has been posting images on giant billboards, like 80 by 100 foot, captured by its camera phone. And just about everyone has a camera phone, right?

Jeff - It was shot on Fuji Reala. Several filter packs were used to change the color of the sky to the blue as shown and to bring out the smooth texture of the rock. The timing for the falls should start next week and it looks like the weather will cooperate.

Come on Thomas, you know that's a weak, and frankly silly argument. You also neglected to mention the film, and now knowing it is Reala, it's even more of an apples-to-oranges comparison. Why even bother? You know full well that the drum scanners can still be fairly easily used. In comparison, how does one print positives optically today?

I've said this before, but the biggest gallery show I've done was about 75% chromes (4x5) scanned on a high-end scanner (flatbed, but still "requires an ancient computer") and printed via inkjet at large sizes. The prints are beautiful, as is the film, and I was perfectly happy with the result. Criticizing work based on how it (could be) printed is really not appropriate.

Thank you everyone - I appreciate the nice words.

Thomas, really stunning image and kudos to you for achieving such perfection with an optical print. I admire anyone who has mastered their skill to produce images that just stand out on their own. You are among these people and I have always enjoyed your work.

Regarding your thoughts on drum scanning, I would like to add that there is a huge range of scanners out there on the market. Some are really old and the companies that built them went dead long ago so operating them today will be a general mess. However, there are a few brands (Howtek, Heidelberg, and Scanmate) that are not only relatively new, but have the benefit of a great community of user and professional support easily available in Europe and US. Also as FYI, my Scanmate and Heidelberg Tango both work on a Windows 7 64BIT machine that was bought brand new about 2 years ago.

Love the Atlanta shot above. Do you live in the city? I have been wanting to shoot at night downtown but not sure on location, parking, etc. - we should meet up!

Here's an experiment from today. From the same location as the other images I posted this past weekend. Giving this tri-color thing another try - I made a cool image a few years ago (http://valdostafilm.blogspot.com/2014/12/tri-color-photographs.html) but subsequent tries have not been good. This one worked pretty well I think?

Hey Corran, I dig the tri-to e effect-nice. I live in town near Emory and sometimes venture down Peachtree from Buckhead during a rainstorm just because. Haven't shot in the dodgiest areas, but I think I may have taken some shots on Ponce while a dealer or someone else less noteworthy was behind me. I find a sense of purpose and knowledge of how to quickly sling a tripod helps keep me safe. Let's definitely meet up-there a shoot of old junk cars in Talmo this weekend with SPS-PM me for meetup details! -Brandon

Yep, and of course easier to do here on roll film (I've done it on 4x5 too). I use 25, 47, and 58 filters, but technically you are supposed to use more "pure" color filters. I just haven't gotten around to buying them. These work fine with a bit of tweaking in the color channels. My filter factors are 3-stops for the red, 3.5-stops for the blue, and 2.5-stops for the green. Might push the green to 3-stops looking at the negatives, but it might've just been the late, reddish light that made it look a bit less exposed.

There's a big thread somewhere on the forum discussing this technique.

Thanks! Although, to be fair, on a cool, sunny day in Monterey or Yosemite, it's hard to take a bad picture. The Monterey shot is from the end of Feb 2016. Late winter is one of the better times to visit Monterey, typically little to no fog and the potential for big surf if a storm is blowing in.

The picture that killed my Hasselblad. Wound up getting a bunch of sand in the body and it jammed.

I've been there several times. The first time sand got all into a manual focus Nikkor lens and focus was too difficult. A repairman in Boulder nodded to me, he was too familiar with GSD sand inside camera equipment. I was extra careful after that and to the extent of not taking any photos when there was any wind. Look up David Odess for your Hasselblad.

Nice Vespa, love the colors! Pali, I like the light and comp in that second one.

Couple of days ago I developed a roll of Provia that's been sitting for a few weeks. Had forgotten what was on it.

First was an abstract of some rocks at a local wildlife area:

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/amicalolacreek-7017ss.jpg

And second, near the start of the Appalachian Trail is a little church in the woods that is actually still used. You've got to go a couple miles down a rough dirt road to get there and they have service once a month. I took this image in their cemetery on 6x9 but cropped it to a 1:2 ratio:

Perhaps! I feel like that'd be a bit overbalanced with the tower way on the right. There's a lot of shrubs and junk at the edge of the canyon that definitely made composing a shot there tough! I would love to be able to explore there all the time and find more dynamic views.

Here's one other one I just finished that is looking into the canyon right as the light peaked, cropped to a 1:2 ratio:

Thanks guys! I wish I was back at the canyon too .

The sun rose a bit after 5am and after about 6:30 or 7 the light was flat and pretty lifeless. I had the whole area to myself for that amazing hour or so except for a very distressed man and his two sons. He was nonplussed when he arrived and I had taken probably the best vantage point of a scraggly tree with the sun rising behind. I can't wait to get to that roll of Velvia...

It is well done.

It is well posed, composed and imaged and the main light well positioned. But either underexposed by 1/3 stop or under processed in the scan and under lighted on the far side. I prefer some definite separation, even if just barely perceptible between the far shoulder and backdrop. Even in "masculine lighting" such as this.

Thanks tuco and Rich.

Rich, I appreciate the comments. My post processing is surely in need of improvement, and I need to put myself on a path for this. The negative is actually a bit overexposed in the highlights. I chose to bring the values down to the rendering as presented and in doing so lost definition of the far shoulder. Where I feel agreement with your comment, is the shadows provide too little definition. Some fill would have addressed this but the one-light feeling would likely have been lost. Or a slight repositioning of the key light to give a boost to the far shoulder.

I have a couple of additional sitters lined up so will be able to refine the approach.

tuco

I feel the contrast ratio between the key and fill light can be much deeper for men, in general.

3-Aug-2017, 03:15
Hi Rich,
I try to over expose Ektar by about a stop.

Then I scanned using the Ektar pre-set with Silverfast bringing exposure down a little dodging the out of bounds highlights, and didn't do any other color balancing. I did "cheat" and increase the vibrancy setting a little during the scan. Post processing was pretty much sharpening and cropping along with dust spotting. From what I've read Ektar was designed for scanning and meant to simulate the palette of a slide film more than most print films. I wouldn't use it for studio lit portraits but for this and Renascence fair type events I really like the combo.

The weather cooperated very well at this event, which is always good.

I've got another roll or two from this to develop along with this year's Ren Faire but had to give up the guest bathroom for the grandkids' visit. Will put the Jobo back up in a few weeks.

I've been tinkering with this Globus 360 again but I think it died for good today, at least without going in for some serious work. I shot a roll of Portra 160NC though today and tried an experiment. Here's the panorama image, made with a Nikon 28mm PC, with my wife at a local state park:

Since that image was taken a rift developed across the foreground prompting the park service to place warning signs and mark the area off limits. Then one day the whole area broke off along the rift and tumbled to the sea and beach below. I suspect that the headland erosion visible on the right will continue and one day Drakes Bay and the Pacific will be the same.

Thanks chassis. It was about 15 or 20 minutes after sunset, but more importantly it was one of the haziest days I've ever seen. Normally, on a clear day, the sky here is really drab after sunset. I've admired others' shots during the post-sunset "blue" hour but never seen such a view. I stayed a little longer than I normally do as the colors this time were fantastic from the lingering light filtering through the haze. Being color negative film though, I did bring out the blue and magenta a bit more in the scan than what was straight off the film, but this is probably a bit like how Provia would've rendered if I had shot that. The hike back was almost pitch-black, and I hadn't brought a flashlight (my cell phone sufficed) as I hadn't intended on staying that late!

I need to go back up there in the winter and shoot some stars. Sadly, while the park is officially open till 10pm, apparently some nosy folks at the edge of the park periphery call the cops if they see flashlights up at the lookout past dark, and the cops will come throw you out, according to another photographer I spoke to up there. GA unfortunately has a lot of that kinda thing. So I'll have to be stealthy.

Edit: forgot to add, the exposure was around 8 seconds IIRC.

On Sesame Street, one of the video clips to teach numbers was a mime / mad painter guy who went around painting numbers on things. The T looks like his handiwork.

Glad you like 'em, I've always framed too wide before, but made a concerted effort to get closer this time. I typically like to over expose the Ektar by 1/2 to 1 stop, though I had to knock these back down about a stop (except the dark lady) when scanning. So, box speed would have been about right. I forgot the bellows factor on the first lady so had to "push" a little while scanning. It's been a while since I shot Porta, since the only color shooting I do are festivals etc I opt for the Ektar and it's punchier palette.

It's hard to keep it all straight when I only shoot color once or twice a year. These were from April/May and I only just got the Jobo out to develop them.

I have some fresh RA-4 chemistry on the way so pulled down a couple of negative boxes of color negatives to look at and decided to try my hand at scanning one, the above, which is my first time scanning a color negative (I scan the finished print - much easier that way for me). Unless I misplaced it, the Epson 3200 doesn't come with a dedicated 6x7 holder so I had to use the 6x9 slot immediately above the 4x5 slot and had to choose a middle negative from the 3 image strips to scan. Otherwise the strip would have protruded from the edge of the scanner and possibly scratching the film. The above image, chosen for its convenience, was taken several years ago at the Japanese Gardens in San Jose on Fuji Reala film during a Meetup group photo outing.

How do you like the 45mm? I have one arriving in the mail today that came with a Pro TL. I'm debating whether or not I'm going to keep the 45mm or sell it for the 35mm.

I like the 45mm very much. The big glass does offer some challenges if you only have 75mm x 75mm filters. Best if you have 100mm x 100mm.

Nice shot. Similar idea and a good example of why I used the graduated filter to darken the sky and keep detail in the shadowed foreground.

Great shot Amfooty! Love all the colours you've got going on with the TV and wallpaper.

The following was shot during the recent eclipse; five exposures in total, with two lenses used: A 150/4.5 Voigtlander Heliar for the eclipse itself, and a 65/4.5 Rodenstock Grandagon for the landscape. One of the more difficult images I've ever taken...

Thanks Chassis!

Not sure what I did to mess up the framing in that first one, must've moved the camera closer for some reason, accidentally taking the rocks out of frame. I also used a GND giving a bit more drama but I underexposed accidentally vs the 2nd one I didn't use a GND.

Interesting how velvia picked up a nice pastel palette which I would only have expected from portra!

A few images on Portra 160 I shot while visiting a friend in Albany, GA. First is his old Studebaker, somewhat damaged from the storms in January, second is a favorite tree along the Flint River, and third is some cypress with interesting weeds/flowers growing on/near it. All with my Rolleiflex K4/50.

Anyway, here's two shots from the Cohutta Wilderness in north GA. This forest really dense and lush - I think I read it's one of the few old-growth forests left in GA.

One more Velvia shot, this time with the 105mm and the extension helical:

Nice. I have that helicoid extension tube. And I aways seem to forget I have it taking along the fixed set instead. I should just attach the #1 to the helicoid and put the #2 and #3 away out of sight.

Corran
7-Nov-2017, 13:18
Yeah I haven't used the #1-3 extension tubes since I got the helical. Also, I've "adapted" large format lenses to the Pentax with it using body caps drilled for #0/1 shutters, using the helical for focusing. 150mm lenses work great, 105mm lenses work at closer focus distances due to the extension from infinity, but still kind of fun to do for something different.

Okay sorry to spam the thread, but last one from this roll of Velvia. The light and rhythm of the trees and creek here was awesome. I took two images with the 45mm f/4 and stitched them to make a pseudo-6x14 image:

Both good, first one is a masterful use of light.

I love the first mage. As chassis said, it is "masterful."

I don't scan color much at all and I decided to work on it a little. I found this blast from the past Vericolor VHC 6329 and of course the one I liked the best has its framing cut short.

Still, I think it is a "fun" image; I like it. Just curious, in what state was it shot?

Thanks. It's in Eastern Washington.

Thanks, I though it might have been, but I wasn't sure if the terrain was "a little too arid" for Washington.

I was struck by just how similar it is to this (https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ib8weVFDeow/VkjUZ8q1lTI/AAAAAAAAEOM/8bD521j21Go/s1600/2001-1.jpg) image, which I'm sure most of us are familiar with!

That one didn’t occur to me but good comparison. I like this one much better.
